This is a question that struck my head and others who have followed countless TV animation for decades: Why is newer animated productions became so "kind", instead to be entertaining and funny?
It's another of those off-topic blogposts that display the evolution of animation as both an industry and artform. I have quit with the animation community in 2019, when a newer era of animation fans love to plays the "Animation Buffs" of their generation on facebook and also, YouTube with clips or full episodes of random shows, with names that I don't think they worth it. Like you probably see, most of my favourite shows and movies were tested long before I know there was an online fandom of that. The last animated work that actually jaw-dropping me for how different and well-looking it is to anything else was the French-Canadian co-production Mighty Mike. Take that, damn furries!
Is the current animation fandom that seems to be full of drugs by the likes of YouTube have actually interviewed or meet people who have or had actually work in the shows they praise for? Have they follow blogs from these guys? As well I am a casual animation fan, I have developped my animation knowledge by the older days of forums and fan-pages. But where that had paid me attention at that time was for the still frames of the cartoons and also, the episode listings and where is available in Home Video. While the latter is currently in flux for the domestic market, it's unclear to me why and where I become myself an animation buff without the pretention to be one. And at that time, there was no Tiktok, Instagram or what else? YouTube!!
The point about most '20s productions is as if the people who working in there are like Instagrammers who always, always and always post viral funny videos than do correctly their job. Because working in animation is very tough, let alone to master it. The same for made comics pages too. Anyone thinking it can be easier have never knew all the behind-the-scenes of the creative outlet. A lot of characters designs feels so rigid and lifeless, with barely actual emotions to the eyes. They're looks comics-strips became cartoons, but to me, it looks ugly and stiff. Even more so than in the older days of Peanuts or the Garfield specials and TV series.
And also, animations are even more clunkier than what you can get from the late-50s Robert McKimson works. The characters feels less like people, by do monologuing with lame wordplays and run back-and-forth on a wacky chase. Is anyone regularly talks by doing nothing, but puns?!?
Besides, they have the nerve to put more attention to the writing by tackling topical issues of our era, or at least, of what the youths of now are concerned. There was an age in which it was so depressing to watching cartoons on the 70s and also 80s, and then now they came back! What is the point to be entertaining or likable when you just do lecturing...?
Without fully known that sometimes, the environment on the animation studios may be haphazard or rather toxic. Social medias only get worse the bond between fans and the creators that there's now-on a point of no-return for get the friendly bond back. Animated contents that were made by sadistical rapists. Others have distateful elements that wouldn't work for mainstream people. A lot of them were based of toxicity between each crew, no mention how Disney still goes so rampant about this "Goodwill" attitude by add hidden messages in most of their productions, by also shows hatred to Gays, vaunting child sexual-trafficking or child abuse. When you know the long partenrship of this corporation with kids and families, inside, it's far to be a wonder like the picture we still have in mind.
A cartoon series like Brandy & Mr. Whiskers from 2024 would never work. Althought the show was a utter disappointment, the animation looks more serviceable than what you may get from most current productions and the voice cast do all their best for such lame comitees scripts. And don't ask me about what would be like a Fan-series of Brandy Harrington all alone! That had get me nerves when somebody mentionning it last year on DeviantArt, and when the fandom of that had passed away by the likes of 2012. If you keep to be a fan of the show thesedays, you're a tad antiquated on your inspiration.
This is mostly there I have to announce you something: An AI-generated process had helped me to make in life the creation of a newer generation of Furries characters based of my OCs (Original characters) Christine and Bugsy I worked on for almost two decades. In the past months, the characters are getting in its last legs since I have quit the idea of the comics gags-page format. What would be AI-Christine and Bugsy altogether become now newer characters on its own: Sarah (The orange-brown vixen girl) and Ashton (The look-a-like Bugsy at a fur male fox with a red cap.). It's easily the only move for make sure that my art is not out of gas, unlike what does happening since Post-Covid time.
Here's the results I got from AI-Bing last friday, for figure what my older characters will may be that way:
