Why commercials are not good for music

In recent months, some TV commercials does of the way to make fun of our intelligence, by acted as edgy, (A fad that had worn already its welcome by years like 2002) are gerenally woke and awkward or worse, lean the intellectual property of creative works without getting any permission. And before to argue me about, yes, I've seen some of these blatant examples every week.

For many people involved in the music industry, this seems to be a necessary evil in order to funded a concert if for Spotify or radios, they often refuse to pay them correctly. But for many audience, it's like as they sells their soul to the ADAH world of advertising. This is sorta a mentality to own culture for free that disturb me a lot, if most of time, many of these agencies don't even seen these creators in person.

But that attitude to managed it, the improvised feel to paid respect to creators in 2024, is like those old YouTube fan-made music videos when most of time, they've just ripped Anime clips by a B-rated rock song without ever actually read the lyrics. Because before to pull a song in a commercial, you have to be able to respect the song. Working in advetising is not seen someone doing any dances on Tiktok when a random music is playing in the background.

Consulting the creators like civilian people is often the most difficult part to carrying a song in a commercial the right way. Because audience like me are still felt irritated when any songs are featuring there as the artists been the spokerpersons of what they aren't announced at. But what these artists would thinking when one of their works are glued on a commercial? Hydro-Québec is a public society where we all proudly pay our part by be something that belong to us, but to the way the company doing up decisions that contradict our consumming choices, like increasing excessively the electricity bills when many people have difficulties to join their meet ends.

Why is Hydro-Québec, instead to steal the song of an artist that have nothing to do with their engagement or tell us to change our electricity consumming habits, they would stop stelling our electrcity for "cheap" to the Americans?

This is an example like many of how commercials became more cloying, stupid, arrogant and ugly. The many Government PSA commercials, Rogers, the last Milk ad featuring Garfield among that, any spots announcing a new phone model as if all their announcers love so much to act at loud every second, many cars commercials that are a wrong depiction of reality or others who do strange dances that have nothing to do with what they've tried to sells. There was even a mention the past weekend that the car company Jaguar does literally woke, by failed to increasing sales of a car company that have lost all its lust... by presenting awkward people who doing edgy and cool as if we still are in the 00s again. Seriously, who ever act like that in the real-life? Certainly not the people from racial and gender minorities like featuring in this ad.

But the real problem is to seen advertisers been opportunists by took profit of the works of creative people on a context when medias are going in a turn of changes and mutations in order to survive in a world where too many people are just informed by the likes of Google or Facebook. And when a clear, legit and accurate bill about the copyright infringement renewal in Canada is more than urging. Actually, commercials could be a sore for the French-Canadian culture, and when these artists are many to complain that the compensations from Spotify et all don't actually justify the quality of their art. For many normal people like me, this is our copyrights bills that need to be fix. That start with commercials. They never been that cloying and annoying, so much that sometimes, you can never known if it's a TV spot or the real thing, because they feels looks the same.

Showing respect to creators by tell advertisers to pay the rights of their works and more importantly, known that these people exists as well. A product that utilize a song that contradict the artist's values may denigrate the product in sales. Because the online piracy days of old only pull it worse when most of these iconic songs are featuring in ads, and without ever spending the time to consulting these people and read the lyrics.

Our culture need help already. The advertising market have to plays its part too by helps them the right way. It's a question of respect and humanity for society and also, embody the true monetary values of art.
